Frequently Asked Questions

Replacing the trim on an existing Moen tub/shower can be accomplished by first determining what kind of valve is in the wall. For many years Moen tub/shower valves have been manufactured using one of three valves. These valves are Standard, Posi-Temp and Moentrol. Although the look is similar, the trim is not necessarily interchangeable.

To determine if the trim can be changed without changing the valve in the wall, the first step is to identify what type you have. This chart(section) shows the differences.

Note:Posi-Temp trim and Moentrol trim are not interchangeable.

Figure 1 shows that the screw holes at the 5:00 and 7:00 position. This is a Standard valve that features a pull on/push off operation and turns left and right for hot and cold.

Figure 2 illustrates the pressure balanced valves. Models that have a lever or knob that rotate only are called Posi-Temp. This "cycling valve" handle is pointed towards the 6:00 position when off, rotates to the 3:00 position for cold, 12:00 for warm and 9:00 for full hot. If this is the way your Moen valve operates, any Posi-Temp trim will fit.

The other valve mentioned in Figure 2 is Moentrol. Moentrol is also pressure balanced and includes the pull on/push off volume control feature. The screw holes are at the 2:00 and 7:00 position. If your valve operates this way and has these screw hole locations, any Moentrol trim will fit.

A recent innovation now makes it possible to retrofit round Moentrol trim to standard valves. Service kit number 145058 (shown below) can be ordered to make the change.

Shower arms are usually threaded into an elbow behind the wall. Rotate the shower arm counterclockwise to remove. The new shower arm and shower head should be sealed using several wraps of thread seal tape. The shower arm flange is usually sealed by using Plumber's putty.

The final consideration is the tub spout. Moen makes two versions. The IPS (Iron Pipe Size) version (below left) is threaded and screws onto a ½" pipe that has male threads.

The other style is the slip fit tub spout (above right). It attaches to ½" copper tubing by slipping on and tightening with a hex wrench. Both tub spouts will have a cut out on the underside near the wall as shown above. If the cut out has a place to insert a hex wrench, you have a slip fit. If the cut out does not have the hex wrench opening, your spout is a threaded (IPS) version.

Yes, if you currently have an existing PosiTemp and/or Moentrol valve. Our trim kits work on Moen's M-Pact system.

Standard-size sink openings and faucet dimensions are used throughout the plumbing industry. However, since there are a few exceptions (such as 4" spread or 8" spread), it is a good idea to check sizes first.

Bathroom Sinks:

Many single- and two-handle faucets are on 4-inch centers, which is the distance between the centers of the hot and cold inlets or mounting bolts. Another popular style for two-handle faucets is the 8" to 16" widespread. These faucets come with flexible hook-ups to allow for adjustments.

Tubs/Showers:

The distance between hot and cold water supplies for two-handle faucets is generally 8". The hole opening for single-handle tub/shower combinations may vary. The opening must be smaller than the faceplate of the unit you are installing for proper coverage.

In most cases, yes. But if you're changing finishes, (i.e.,from chrome to
brass), you'll probably want to change the drain assembly to match your new
faucet finish.
 

Yes. The extension kit number will be dependent on the type of valve that is installed, as well as the finish of the trim. Below is a list out service kit numbers and descriptions for some of these extensions kits that are available.

The extension kits for Posi-Temp valve:

For the 2- or 3-function transfer valves (models 3375 or 3372):

A pop-up drain assembly is commonly used in bathroom sinks. A mechanical plug called a "pop-up stopper" is used to hold water in the sink. Moen offers lavatory faucets both with and without the pop-up drain.

There is a gap in this location to ensure the screws on the escutcheon do not interfere with the operation of the handle. Depending on the installation, it is acceptable for this gap to be between ½" to an inch.

Available for both lavatory and tub / shower faucets, M-Pact is a common valve system that allows you to change your trim above the sink, without changing the valve below the sink; making style changes and upgrades quick and easy for you. You can upgrade the style at any point in the decorating or construction process or switch style years down the road without replacing any faucet plumbing.

It is possible that the balancing spool is stuck due to non-use. Replace the cartridge to correct this situation. To prevent future issues, use the faucet at least once a week.
 

This can be corrected by removing the handle and turning the stem of the cartridge 180 degrees (either clockwise or counter-clockwise) and reinstalling the handle.
 

A pressure-balancing tub and shower faucet balances incoming hot and cold water pressure to compensate for fluctuations in water flow. Balancing the water flow keeps shower temperatures constant and comfortable, within ±3°F (1°C) of the original temperature, despite other demands such as flushing the toilet or starting the dishwasher. Moen's PosiTemp and Moentrol® tub and shower valves all feature pressure-balancing. Both valves require pressure on the hot and the cold side to operate.

While the valves do have several similarities:

• A pressure-balanced system that maintains water temperature within ±3°F (1°C)
• Built-in temperature limit stops which allow you to control how far the handle rotates, therefore, controlling the range of water temperature
• Best water flow for any comparatively priced valve
• Available in a variety of connections from common ½" CC/sweat, ½" IPS-threaded; ½" PEX or CPVC
• Meets pressure-balancing safety codes

There are a few differences to consider before making a decision.

A 7/64 hex wrench in most cases can be used to remove the handle set screw. A Phillips screwdriver is then used to remove the handle adapter.

The entire cartridge can be removed, rotated 180 degrees, and then reinstalled to correct this temperature issue.

In most cases, the knob has been installed upside down. To correct this simply:

1. Remove handle cap and the Phillips screw under the cap.
2. Pull the handle off the faucet.
3. Now replace the handle, only this time, make sure the point of the waterdrop handle is pointing downward to the six o'clock position.
4. Replace the Phillips head screw and handle cap.

The ExactTemp® consists of a minimum of two valves, one thermostatic and one volume control valve. The thermostatic valve will only adjust the temperature of the water, and the volume control will turn the unit on and off and adjust the volume of water. The thermostatic valve has a safety stop preset at 105 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature override button will allow the user to exceed this temperature and reach temperatures of up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition to being vertical spa compatible, it also provides Thermostatic Control, Temperature Consistency, and Temperature Memory. Our ¾" ExactTemp valve allows for multiple shower configurations due to its high volume water delivery system.

The Spot Resist finish can be cleaned with a mild soap, then rinsing thoroughly with warm water and drying with a clean, soft cloth. Never use cleaners containing abrasives (including abrasive sponges or steel wool), ammonia, bleach or sodium hypochlorite, organic solvents (e.g. alcohols) or other harsh chemicals (e.g. lime scale removers) to clean the Spot Resist finish, as they may damage the
finish. Failure to comply with these cleaning instructions may void Moen's warranty.

In 1992, the federal government passed the Energy Policy Act. This law placed strict regulations on flow rates. All manufacturers must adhere to these standards and no adjustments can be made. In some cases, you may be receiving less than the maximum allowable water flow rate. Normally, this is due to low water pressure, a blockage in the plumbing or in the faucet, or a faucet malfunction.

WaterSense is a program sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to promote water efficiency (it is similar in nature to the EPA's Energy Star program). A product with the WaterSense label indicates that it meets water efficiency and performance criteria outlined by the EPA to help you reduce water use in your home.

Our showerheads include a pressure compensating flow regulator that actively delivers the best water flow for the amount of water that is available. Removal of this will actually diminish performance.

Single-handle faucets are available that mount through 1, 2, 3 or 4 hole
applications. Two-handle faucets come in 3 and 4 hole applications. If your
existing faucet is covering up the holes, you can look under the sink to see how
many you have.

These handles are designed to rotate forward to prevent any potential backsplash interference. The only exceptions to this are the faucets in our 90 Degree collection.
 

Changing the O-rings for most Moen 1 handle kitchen faucets can be done without doing anything below the sink except turning off the water at the supply line valves.

Remove the faucet handle. Most models have a screw behind a red/blue plug button or under the handle cap (go to Browse Products to assist in locating your model. The parts breakdown will show the location of the handle screw for your model). After the plug button or handle cap has been removed, use a 7/64" hex wrench to remove the handle screw. Follow the parts breakdown for the order of the handle mechanism. Once the handle mechanism kit is removed (including the spout retainer nut) rotate the spout back and forth while pulling up.

Some Moen faucets have handles that remove by loosening the screw in the back of the handle. To loosen this screw use a 3/32" hex wrench. After the handle has been removed unscrew the spout collar nut by turning counterclockwise then lift and rotate the spout.

Remove the existing O-rings from the valve body noting the location of each. Clean (with 50/50 solution of vinegar and water) the inside of the spout and the outside of the valve body. Lubricate the O-rings using the silicon grease included and install the new O-rings on the valve body. Apply the lubricant to the outside of the valve body and the inside of the spout hub.

A helpful hint:

Always lubricate faucet O-rings with silicone-based grease (Moen part number 99915). Do not use plumber's grade faucet grease, silicon sprays or any lubricant that contain petroleum. Petroleum based lubricants may react with rubber seals and actually cause the faucet to become even more difficult to operate.

Re-install the spout, handle mechanism kit and the handle in the reverse order.

During manufacturing, lubrication (silicone) is used on the cartridge. The combination of lubrication and the weight of the handle can cause the faucet to self-close. This can be corrected in several ways:

If your faucet has a 1225 cartridge, make sure all screws are tight.

If your faucet has a 1255 cartridge - replace the cartridge.

If your faucet has a 4000 cartridge - tighten the cartridge nut or replace the cartridge.

If the faucet has a handle connector:

1. Change the handle connector.
2. Check the old cartridge stem for a gray metal washer. This washer must be transferred to the stem of the new cartridge.

Changing the O-rings on a 2 handle kitchen faucet is usually easier than a 1 handle. It is not necessary to turn the water off under the sink provided that no one turns the faucet handles to the on position while servicing.

Identifying the specific model number of your faucet and viewing the parts breakdown is suggested (go to Browse Products to assist in locating your model).

If the spout rotates and extends towards the sink at a low angle, a cap on the top of the spout unscrews (counterclockwise). A rubber jar gripper or a strap wrench makes this part of the job easier. Once the cap has been removed, rotate the spout while pulling upward.

If your faucet has a spout that is a high fill, cathedral or high arc spout there will be a collar that unscrews counterclockwise. When the collar has been loosened, pull up on the spout and remove it from the faucet. Many spouts will also feature a split white nylon washer to help secure the spout to the faucet.

Follow the same procedure for cleaning, replacing and lubricating as detailed above.

This is a normal characteristic of any faucet with a high-arc spout. After the handle (or handles) are shut off, there is still water inside of the spout. Any residual water past the arc of the spout will slowly drip out of the spout. Gravity will pull this water from the spout; however, it should stop after several minutes.

For one-handle faucets with a 1225 cartridge, simply remove the cartridge and lubricate it both inside and out with silicone-based grease (Moen part number 99915). Do not use plumber's grade faucet grease, silicon sprays or any lubricant that contain petroleum. Petroleum based lubricants may react with rubber seals and actually cause the faucet to become even more difficult to operate.

For two-handle faucets, we recommend replacing the cartridge. The part number for a two-handle kitchen cartridge is 1224. 

For one-handle faucets with a 1255 or 4000 cartridge, replace the cartridge.

Moen offers a Hose Management System (service kit 159060) that is intended to help prevent the hose and the weight from getting caught on under-sink obstructions. This can be cut to accommodate different cabinet sizes, and it is compatible with all of the pullout / pulldown models, with the exception of the Aberdeen.
 

The LifeShine can be cleaned with most household cleaners (including mild abrasives), when used according to the manufacturers' instructions for use. Avoid using any cleaners or pads/sponges that are unsafe for polished metallic surfaces. Most green, fibrous pads or sponges contain microscopic mineral particles that can scratch a faucet's finish, including LifeShine finishes. Cleaner manufacturers may change their formulations at any time; therefore, Moen does not recommend any specific cleanser. Immediately after cleaning your faucet, wash off remaining cleanser with water. To remove water spots, use a soft, damp cloth. We also suggest a periodic application of a quality, non-abrasive wax such as car wax or furniture wax. For faucets with clear knob style handles, cleaners should be approved for acrylics.

Do not use cleaners that contain abrasives, harsh chemicals, alcohol, or other organic solvents. Avoid using any other cleansers or pads/sponges that are unsafe for polished metallic surfaces. Most green, fibrous pads/sponges contain microscopic mineral particles that can scratch a faucet's finish. Cleaner manufacturers may change their formulations at any time; therefore, Moen does not recommend any specific cleaner. Immediately after cleaning your faucet, wash off remaining cleaner with water. To remove water spots, use warm water and a soft, damp cloth. To preserve the luster of your faucet, occasionally apply a high quality non-abrasive wax, such as car wax or furniture polish. For faucets with clear knob style handles, cleaners should be approved for acrylics.

Basket strainers are typically standard in size and fit most sink openings - 3½" for kitchen sinks and 2" for bar sinks.

Due to the variety of color, style and garbage disposals available, basket strainers are usually sold separately.

Moen's production line does not differentiate between wholesale and retail
models. There is only one grade of brass, only one grade of cartridge and only
one grade of warranty coverage - the best. While the numbering system for
Moen's wholesale distributors and retail distributors may vary and subtle
installation and trim differences may exist. These may include, but are not
limited to, packaging, threaded or slip-fit style tub spouts and metallic or
non-metallic drain assemblies. The quality and limited lifetime warranty
against leaks, drips, materials, and workmanship remain the same for all of our
products.
 

Yes. Rigid plastic PVC (Polyvinyl-Chloride) tubing can be joined to copper using "grip fittings." Each side of a grip fitting contains a narrow grip ring and a plastic compression ring (or rubber O-ring) that forms the seal.
Useful Tips:

• Use penetrating oil to help loosen corroded mounting nuts.
• Use a hacksaw for cutting steel or plastic pipe.
• Use a basin wrench for those hard to reach areas.
• Use a tubing cutter to make straight, smooth cuts in plastic and copper tubing.
• Wrap thread seal tape clockwise around threaded joints to ensure a tight seal.

First, it is important to know how thick of a surface that a specific model is designed to be installed through. This information will be provided on the Specification Sheet. If an extension kit is still needed for your particular application, please contact us with the model number in question and we can determine the correct extension kit, if available.
 

You may need to obtain an adapter in order to connect your new faucet to your pre-existing supply lines or shut-off valves. Moen faucets typically utilize either flexible supplies with ⅜" compression fittings or ½" IPS connections. Please view our Replacement Part Locator to determine your model and the connection type it uses. The size of the adapter will depend on the model and the type of fitting it needs to connect to.

Soldered fittings, also called "sweat fittings," are used to join copper pipes such as those commonly encountered in some in-wall tub and shower applications. Soldering a pipe joint or "sweating a pipe" is accomplished by heating a copper fitting with a propane torch until the fitting is just hot enough to melt metal solder. The heat draws the solder into the gap between the fitting and pipe to form a water tight seal. Soldering requires some skill and attention to safety, but it creates a strong bond when joining copper pipes. Flexible copper tubing can also be joined with compression fittings or flare fittings (these do not require soldering).

Before you leave the store with either your new faucet or the replacement part you need, make sure you have these items to help install the faucet or part easily. These items are also listed on the Moen package:

• Phillips and Regular Screwdrivers
• Adjustable Wrench (or basin wrench for hard to reach areas)
• Flashlight
• Pliers
• Plumber's Putty (not required on all installations)
• Thread seal tape
• Allen Wrench (not required on all installations)

Thread seal tape and pipe dope are both effective pipe sealants. However, many people prefer using thread seal tape since it is cleaner to work with than traditional grease or paste-like sealants. Plumber's putty is used to form a water tight seal between the sink and the faucet and between the sink and the drain. Some of our models include gaskets making sealants optional. Plumber's putty is not for use on threaded pipe joints or marble surfaces.

The most time-consuming, and sometimes challenging step, will be removing the old faucet, especially if your water supply connections are corroded (and, therefore, hard to disconnect). By using the installation guide, installing the new faucet, however, should be relatively simple.

Document the model number and retain both your paperwork and receipt for model identification.

There are three ways you can purchase repair parts. One way is through a local Moen dealer. Second, is through our online store. Third, is by calling our Consumer Services Center at 1-800-289-6636 Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 7:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am to 3:00 pm (Eastern Time).

We carry many parts for discontinued models; however, there are exceptions. To determine if we have the part you need, we will ask you to provide the age of your faucet and the model number.
 

It is impossible to determine if someone will be comfortable performing their own repair on a faucet. Instructions are included with most parts, and it is recommended that those instructions be reviewed. If there are questions regarding the instruction, contact 1-800-BUY-MOEN. We can provide answers to your questions, which should help you determine if the repair will be something that you are comfortable with.

You can expect to be asked the following questions: What is your faucet's model number? Where did you find the model number? Can you provide proof of purchase? What is the age of your faucet? What is the problem you are experiencing and has any work been done to correct it?

Please be near your faucet when you contact us as we may need to ask further questions or recommend a resolution.

If your faucet uses a 1225 cartridge, then the handle can be removed and the stem of the cartridge can be rotated 180 degrees (either clockwise or counter-clockwise) and reinstalling the handle. Another option would be to reverse the supply lines feeding the faucet. If your faucet uses either the 1255 or 4000 cartridge, then the only option would be to reverse the supply lines feeding the faucet.

Without a specific model number, it is hard to determine the exact cause of a leak. In general, leaks are often caused by a scratched or torn cartridge, O-ring, or grommet. Typically, a cartridge replacement will correct this type of leak.

Exact model numbers can be found on your box or on your instruction sheet. If unavailable, you may find the general family series number on the back of the spout (non pullout). The series number will not be the exact model number, but it will be helpful when used in conjunction with the faucet image shown in our Replacement Part Locator. Some of our newer model faucets may have a model identifying tag attached to the supply lines.

This number can be a series number or a component number. A series number will indicate the "series" of faucet,but not the exact number within that series. A component number is used during the manufacturing process, and it will also not indicate your model number. Please view our Replacement Part Locator to determine the model of your faucet.  

NOTE: If your Moen faucet was manufactured after 2009 and you are looking at the 1225 cartridge, it is possible that you may actually have a 1255 cartridge because cartridge styles can vary by the date of manufacture. If you're not quite sure, we'd recommend that you refer to the original documentation that came with your faucet, or feel free to contact us. You can also call us for help at 1-800-BUY-MOEN (1-800-289-6636).

No, the valve is actually designed so that the water is isolated from the electronics. In addition, the ioDIGITAL™ system operates under low voltage (5V). All current is properly isolated and sealed (through the controller) and the product is certified to cUPC with applicable standards ASSE 1016 & ASME A112.18.1M/CSA B 125.1 (shower valves), ASSE 1070 & CSA B125.3 (roman tub), and UL1951.
A GFCI outlet will provide additional protection.

The GFCI is an Earth Leakage Breaker that detects faults to ground. The current threshold is very low, typically 15mA, which means it will trip well before any risks could occur. Jetted tubs already require dedicated GFCIs (110V, 15-20A) for pump/motor and heaters.

Yes, the valve needs to be plugged into a 110v AC supply on a GFCI circuit. A
certified electrician should install the initial GFCI outlet.
 

• The vertical spa will work with standard hot water tanks and typical drainage.
• If your shower layout includes two vertical spa ioDIGITAL™ spa valves, an 80 gallon or larger hot water tank is recommended. The vertical spa system works with plumbing and drainage that are common to most households.

The controller mounts simply with two screws in a standard 2" x 4" wall.

The ioDigital™ valve is consists of a valve and one controller. One knob on the controller will operate the temperature, and another knob to adjust the volume. The volume knob also offers Pause feature, which will allow the user to temporarily pause the shower. Both knobs have corresponding LEDs that will light up so the user has a visual reference of the temperature and pressure. The controller also has multiple presets, so favorite temperature and pressure settings can be saved by one user or multiple users. There are three different types of ioDigital™ valves: shower, roman tub, and vertical spa. All three offer an optional remote control that can be used up to 30 feet away. They also provide Thermostatic Control, Temperature Consistency, and Temperature Memory. For more information, please view our product literature in our Literature Center.

Hot and cold water may not be supplied to the valve, improper use or an obstruction in the spout/showerhead could cause this to happen.

Solution

First, if external shut off valves are present, verify they are opened all of the way. It is extremely important that the units have both hot and cold water supplied to the inlets of the valve body.

Second, make sure there is nothing obstructing the spout or showerhead.

Third, it is essential to identify the model of your faucet. Please view our Find Your Product section to determine your model.

For Posi-Temp models:

1. Rotate the handle to turn it on. The handle on this model does not pull out.
2. Both hot and cold water MUST be supplied to the valve to get ANY water from the unit.
3. If the valve has stops, both will need to be opened. If your Posi-Temp valve has these, they will be located on the inlets of the valve. The stops look like small flat head screws. The flat would need to be horizontal to be opened (if it is vertical, that will shut the water off).

For Moentrol models:

1. Verify the handle is being pulled out to turn the water on. If the handle is only being rotated, the water will not turn on.
2. Both hot and cold water MUST be supplied to the valve to get ANY water from the unit.
3. If the valve has stops, both will need to be opened. If your Moentrol valve has these, they will be located on the inlets of the valve. The stops look like small flat head screws. Use a flat head screwdriver to unscrew this counter-clockwise until you reach a stop, this will ensure it is opened all of the way (screwing clockwise until a stop is reached will turn the water off).

For ¾" ExactTemp models:

1. These units must be installed with a volume control valve in addition to the thermostatic valve. The volume control must be rotated counter-clockwise to turn the water on. The temperature (thermostatic) handle only adjusts the temperature.
2. This model will have stops located on the inlets of the valve. The stops look like small flat head screws. Use a flat head screwdriver to unscrew this counter-clockwise until you reach a stop, this will ensure it is opened all of the way (screwing clockwise until a stop is reached will turn the water off).

For ioDigital models:

1. Verify the controller will turn on. If it does not turn on, please see ioDigital valve will not turn on.
2. Verify the shut-off valves are in the open position. These will vary depending on your IoDigital model.

Typical Cause

Debris or an obstruction in the balancing spool is causing it not to move freely within its housing. In some models, a lack of pressure feeding the hot and cold will be the cause. The valve also may need to be calibrated.

Solution

First, verify the hot water system in the home is operational.

Second, it is essential to identify the model of your faucet. Please view our Find Your Product section to determine your model.

For Posi-Temp models:

The 1222 cartridge would need to be replaced and the valve body would need to be flushed and cleaned.

For Moentrol models:

Inspect the 1423 balancing spool. This will appear on the front of the valve body, either to the right or above the cartridge. It will look similar to a large flat head screw, and it will be brass in color. A large flat-bladed screwdriver can be used to unscrew the balancing spool from the valve. There will be a spool inside this piece, and it needs to move freely inside of its shell. If the spool does not move freely, then the 1423 balancing spool will need to be replaced.

For ¾" ExactTemp models:

Note: For ½" ExactTemp valves refer to original service manual

1. Verify the shut off valves (check stop kit) are in the open position. This will be a screw in the center of the check stop kit. These should be unscrewed counter-clockwise.
2. Check to see if the hot and cold lines are reversed. If the supply lines are accessible, feel the temperature of the pipes. The cold supply must be connected to the cold (right) side of the valve, and the hot supply must be connected to the hot (left) side of the valve. If this is the case, the valve will need to be reinstalled. Note: The cartridge cannot be reversed to correct this issue.
3. The cartridge would need to be calibrated. Instructions on calibration can be obtained via the ExactTemp Service Manual in our Literature Center.

Note: When calibrated properly, the ExactTemp valve should provide a range of temperature of 80 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

For ioDigital models:

1. Verify the shut off valves are in the open position. These will vary depending on your ioDigital model.
2. Remove the valve inlet screens and inspect for any debris. The water supply will need to be shut off, and then the black nut on the inlets can be unscrewed to remove the inlet screens. Rinse off any debris that may be on these screens and reinstall.

For standard valve models:

1. Check to see if there are shut off valves installed with the unit. Verify these valves are opened all the way.
2. The cartridge (for one-handle faucets) or cartridges (for two-handle faucets) would need to be removed (or replaced) and the valve body would need to be flushed and cleaned.

Typical Cause

This is most likely due to an error in installation, an issue with the cartridge, a lack of hot and cold water supplied to the valve or a lack of calibration of temperature.

Solution

First, it is essential to identify the model of your faucet. Please view our Find Your Product section to determine your model.

For Posi-Temp models:

1. Make sure the handle is on properly. If it is on upside down, the handle will not rotate the cartridge to provide a mixture of hot and cold. Simply remove the handle and reinstall.
2. If issue persists, replace the 1222 cartridge and flush the valve body.

For Moentrol or standard valve models:

Replace the 1225 cartridge and flush the valve body.

For ExactTemp models:

1. Verify the shut off valves (check stop kit) are in the "open" position. This will be a screw in the center of the check stop kit. These should be unscrewed counter-clockwise.
2. Check to see if the hot and cold lines are reversed. If the supply lines are accessible, feel the temperature of the pipes. The cold supply must be connected to the cold (right) side of the valve, and the hot supply must be connected to the hot (left) side of the valve. If this is the case, the valve will need to be reinstalled. Note: The cartridge cannot be reversed to correct this issue.

Typical Cause

Hot water may not be supplied to the valve, a balancing spool may be stuck or the temperature may be calibrated not to allow full hot water (up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit).

Solution

First, if external shut off valves are present, verify they are opened all of the way. It is extremely important that the units have both hot and cold water supplied to the inlets of the valve body. Also, verify the hot water system in the home is on.

Second, it is essential to identify the model of your faucet. Please view our Find Your Product section to determine your model.

Note: If comparing the temperature of the water to an adjacent lavatory faucet, you may notice the temperature may not be as hot (or as cold) in the tub/shower valve.

Also, depending on your climate, the incoming water (ground water) temperature may fluctuate during the year. This can cause the overall hot temperature to decrease (or increase) throughout the year.

For Posi-Temp models:

1. If the water pressure decreases when going from cold to hot, the 1222 cartridge would need to be replaced.
2. Verify the handle rotates all the way counter-clockwise to a 9 o'clock position. If the handle stops before this position, then the temperature limit stop will need to be re-positioned. Please view the installation instructions for assistance on how to set this.
3. If the issue is still unresolved, replace the 1222 cartridge and flush the valve body.

For Moentrol Models:

1. Inspect the 1423 balancing spool. This will appear on the front of the valve body, either to the right or above the cartridge. It will look similar to a large flat head screw, and it will be brass in color about the size of a quarter. A large flat-bladed screwdriver can be used to unscrew the balancing spool from the valve. There will be a spool inside this piece, and it needs to move freely inside of its shell. If the spool does not move freely, then the 1423 balancing spool will need replaced.
2. Verify the top of the handle rotates all the way to a 9 o'clock position. If the handle stops before this position, then the adjustable temperature limit stop will need to be adjusted to allow the handle to rotate all the way to the hot position. Please view the installation instructions for assistance on how to set this.
3. If the issue is still unresolved, replace the 1225 cartridge and flush the valve body.

For ¾" ExactTemp models:

Note: For ½" ExactTemp valves refer to original service manual.

1. Make sure the remperature override button is being pressed in. If calibrated properly, the handle will hit a stop at 105 degrees. In order to get warmer temperatures, the temperature override button needs to be pushed in and then the handle will be able to rotate counter-clockwise to warmer temperatures.
2. Verify the stops are opened. The stops are located on the inlets of the valve, and they look like small flat head screws. Use a flat head screwdriver to unscrew this counter-clockwise until you reach a stop, this will ensure it is opened all of the way (screwing clockwise until a stop is reached will turn the water off).
3. The cartridge may need to be calibrated. Instructions on calibration can be obtained via the ExactTemp Service Manual in our Literature Center.

For ioDigital models:

1. Make sure the temperature knob is being rotated to the hot side. The corresponding LEDs with light red to illustrate this.
2. Verify that both shut off valves are in the open position. These will vary depending on your ioDigital model.
3. Verify the hot water supply is attached to the hot water side and the cold water supply is on the cold side. Feel the temperature of the inlet lines. If the hot is going to the cold side and the cold is going to the hot side, the lines will need to be reversed.
4. Remove the valve inlet screens and inspect for any debris. The water supply will need to be shut off, and then the black nut on the inlets can be unscrewed to remove the inlet screens. Rinse off any debris that may be on these screens and reinstall.
5. The maximum temperature adjustment setting will need to be calibrated. This can be identified as a blue dial on the valve labeled "Max Temp Adjustment" This can be rotated clockwise to increase the maximum temperature (counter-clockwise will decrease the temperature).

Note: The maximum temperature is factory preset at 115 degrees Fahrenheit.

Typical Cause

This is caused by either a restriction in the system or an installation issue.

Solution

1. Remove the tub spout and inspect for any obstructions that may restrict the water from the spout. Turn the water on and see if the water comes out of the showerhead; if it does not, the issue is with the tub spout. If it cannot be freed of any obstructions, then replace the tub spout.
2. Inspect the type of pipe used for the installation. From the tub port of the valve, only ½" Copper or ½" Galvanized Iron pipe (IPS) can be used. If PEX or CPVC was used from this connection, it will need to be replaced with either ½" Copper or ½" Galvanized Iron pipe.
3. Measure the distance between the tub spout and the valve. The tub spout can be no less than six inches and no greater than eleven inches below the valve. If the measurement does not meet these criteria, it can cause this to occur.
4. There should only be one elbow from the tub port of the valve to the tub spout. If there are multiple elbows, they will need to be eliminated.
5. If any transitional fittings that might restrict the water flow were used, they will need to be removed.
6. Inspect the valve body. If it was installed upside down, it will need to be reinstalled in the correct orientation. Many valves will have the word "up" printed on the valve.
7. If this is a two-handle model, then inspect the flow director (diverter) in the valve. Depending on the location of the water supplies, it may need to be reversed.

Note: If there is no longer any access into the wall, then a volume control valve (Moen part number 91888) can be installed between the shower arm and the showerhead. This will allow the user to turn the showerhead on and off at their discretion, however, this will not provide a positive or complete shut off.

Typical Cause

On non-pullout or non-pulldown models, a scratched or torn o-ring or rubber seal not sealing properly inside of the spout can cause a leak. If this is a pullout or pulldown model, the vacuum breaker within the spout receptor may not be sealing properly.

Solution

For non-pullout or non-pulldown faucets:

This issue should be resolved by replacing the o-ring(s) inside of the spout. The number of o-rings inside of your spout will vary depending on the model. It is essential to identify the model of the faucet in order to obtain the proper Moen service kit with the correct spout o-rings for your model; different models utilize different sizes of o-rings. Please view our Find Your Product section to determine your model. We recommend lubricating the spout o-rings with silicone-based grease (Moen part number 99915, included with o-ring kits). Do not use plumber's grade faucet grease, silicon sprays or any lubricant that may contain petroleum. Petroleum-based lubricants may react with the rubber seals and could cause the spout to become difficult to operate. When replacing the o-rings, it is recommended that you clean the inside of the spout and the outside of the valve body.

For pullout or pulldown faucets:

1. Check the connection between the hose and the wand. There should be a screen washer or o-ring (depending on the model) that provides a seal between the two. If this is missing, or if it is compromised, then the screen washer or o-ring will need to be replaced. Please view our Find Your Product section to determine your faucet and the correct part or kit for that model.
2. If your model has a vacuum breaker, it may be leaking. This issue would be resolved by replacing the vacuum breaker or installing a vacuum breaker conversion kit inside of the spout receptor. This part will vary depending on the age and model of your faucet. Please view our Find Your Product section to determine your faucet and the correct part or kit for that model.

Typical Cause

The side sprayer is not able to shut off completely.

Solution

The side sprayer would need to be replaced. It is imperative to identify your model because the side sprays are unique to certain models. To determine your model, please see our Find Your Product section. It is also recommended that you look underneath the sink to view the connection of the side spray hose to the discharge tube of the faucet. It is possible to have either a threaded connection (identified by a metal nut at the end of the hose) or our Hydrolock connection (a black piece with a white clip at the end of the hose) on the side sprayer hose. Make sure the correct connection type is obtained for your faucet.

Typical Cause

This type of leak is often caused by scratched or torn o-ring on the cartridge or spout.

Solution

First, it is essential to identify the model of your faucet. Please view our Find Your Product section to determine your model.

For non-pullout or non-pulldown faucets:

This issue should be resolved by replacing the o-ring(s) inside of the spout, as well as the cartridge. The number of o-rings inside of your spout will vary depending on the model. It is essential to identify the model of the faucet in order to obtain the proper Moen service kit with the correct spout o-rings for your model; and different models utilize different sizes of o-rings. When replacing the o-rings, clean the inside of the spout and the outside of the valve body. We also recommend lubricating the spout o-rings with silicone-based grease (Moen part number 99915, included with o-ring kits). Do not use plumber's grade faucet grease, silicon sprays or any lubricant that may contain petroleum. Petroleum based lubricants may react with the rubber seals and could cause the spout to become difficult to operate. Also, the correct cartridge will need to be identified and replaced.

For pullout or pulldown faucets:

Replacing the appropriate cartridge for your model of faucet should resolve the issue.

Typical Cause

This is caused by a malfunctioning diverter or debris within the valve/spout.

Solution

Replace the diverter. Please view our Find Your Product section to determine your model and the required diverter. Also, make sure the valve body is cleaned. In some models, the diverter is installed in the valve body; on other models it is installed around the valve body under the spout. If it is one of these models, make sure the spout is cleaned as well.

If the side spray does not shut off completely, it would also need to be replaced.

Typical Cause

The hose weight is out of position, the docking collar is broken or the hose has yet to be calibrated.

Solution

1. Check the location of the hose weight. Some models will have white indicator mark on the hose. It is recommended the weight be installed between the start of the loop curvature and this mark. If your model does not have a white mark, then install the weight anywhere between 4" to 8" up from the start of the loop curvature. For optimal performance, maintain an 8"x8" clear area for the hose and weight to travel, free of any moveable items (bottles, cleaning supplies, etc.).
   Note: The weight might need to be repositioned higher on the hose if non-moveable pipes or other fixtures are interfering with the hose or weight.
2. Inspect the docking collar. This will typically be a black plastic piece at the end of the spout where the wand should reside. If this is broken, it will need to be replaced. Please view our Find Your Product section to determine your model and the required docking collar.
3. If this is a new installation, the hose will need to be calibrated. This will occur after the hose has been filled with water and used for 24 hours.

Typical Cause

The diverter within the wand is malfunctioning.

Solution

Replace the wand. Please view our Find Your Product section to determine your model and the required wand.

Typical Cause

Leaks are often caused by a scratched o-ring or grommet on the cartridge. On models that use a handle mechanism, a broken part could also be the cause.

Solution

1. Replace the cartridge (on one-handle models) or cartridges (on two-handle models). It is essential that the model of the unit be identified to ensure you are replacing the proper cartridge. Please view our Find Your Product section to determine your model and the cartridge(s) required. After determining the model, you can view step-by-step instructions in our Animated Installation Help section.
2. If the faucet uses a handle mechanism, inspect the parts. If one of these items is broken, the handle mechanism will need to be replaced. Please view our Find Your Product section to determine which handle mechanism your model uses.
   Note: Improper installation of the handle mechanism can also cause this to occur.

Typical Cause

Depending on the model, this could be caused by debris in the cartridge, debris in the aerator, a stuck diverter or a malfunctioning wand.

Solution

First, it is essential to identify the model of your faucet. Please view our Find Your Product section to determine your model. Also, it is recommended that the supply lines from the shut-off valves be checked to ensure the faucet is receiving full pressure from both hot and cold supply lines.

For pullout or pulldown kitchen sink faucets:

Remove the hose from the wand and inspect the screen that is in between these items. If there is debris in the screen, rinse it off with water. Then, hold the end of the hose in the sink and turn on the water. If the pressure is good from the hose, reinstall the screen and wand. This should resolve the issue. If there is still low pressure after reinstalling the wand, then the wand would need to be replaced. If there is low water pressure from the hose, the cartridge would need to be replaced and the valve body would need to be flushed and cleaned.

For non-pullout or non-pulldown kitchen sink faucets:

Remove the aerator and rinse off any debris. If this does not resolve the issue, and if the unit also has a side spray, check the pressure from the side spray. If the side spray has good pressure, then try activating the trigger on the side spray several times to see if pressure returns to the spout. If it does not, then the diverter would need replaced. If your model uses a hardware kit (Moen part number 100886) with a diverter, then it is recommended that the hardware kit be replaced in addition to the diverter. If this does not resolve the issue (or if your faucet does not have a side sprayer), the cartridge would need to be replaced and the valve body would need to be flushed and cleaned.

For bathroom sink faucets:

Remove the aerator and rinse off any debris. If this does not resolve the issue, then the cartridge (for one-handle faucets) or cartridges (for two-handle faucets) would need to be replaced and the valve body would need to be flushed and cleaned.

Typical Cause

This is caused by the shut off valves not being turned on, a lack of pressure through one of the shut off valves or an obstruction in one of the supply lines feeding water to the faucet.

Solution

1. Make sure both shut-off valves are fully turned on.
2. Check both the supply lines from the shut-off valves to the faucet. These supply lines need to deliver full pressure to the faucet. If the supply lines do not deliver full pressure, then the faucet will not produce full pressure. The plumbing of the home would need to be investigated for a resolution.
3. If the issue is still not resolved, then the cartridge (for one-handle faucets) or cartridges (for two-handle faucets) would need to be removed (or replaced) and the valve body would need to be flushed and cleaned.

Typical Cause

This is caused by debris and/or an impaired o-ring inside of the spout.

Solution

For non-pullout or non-pulldown faucets:

1. Remove the spout and lubricate the spout o-rings with silicone-based grease (Moen part number 99915). Do not use plumber's grade faucet grease, silicon sprays or any lubricant that may contain petroleum. Petroleum-based lubricants may react with the rubber seals and cause the spout to become even more difficult to operate. It is also recommended that you clean the inside of the spout and the outside of the valve body when replacing the o-rings.
2. Replace the o-rings inside of the spout. The number of o-rings inside of your spout will vary depending on the model. It is essential to identify the model of the faucet in order to obtain the proper Moen service kit with the correct spout o-rings for your model; and different models utilize different sizes of o-rings. Please view our Find Your Product section to determine your model and the correct Moen service kit that will have the proper o-rings. Remember to clean the inside of the spout and the outside of the valve body when replacing the o-rings, as well as lubricating the o-rings with silicone-based grease (Moen part number 99915).
3. Inspect the retainer nut on top of the spout (if applicable). Make sure it is not overly tightened.

Note: If the mounting nut underneath the sink is overly tightened to the mounting bracket, this could cause the spout to be difficult to rotate.

For pullout or pulldown faucets:

1. Remove the spout receptor and clean any debris that is impeding the movement.
2. If there is corrosion on the valve body of the interior of the spout receptor, the faucet will need to be replaced.

Note: If the mounting nut underneath the sink is overly tightened to the mounting bracket, this could cause the spout receptor to be difficult to rotate.

Typical Cause

This is usually caused by (but not limited to) sediment or debris in the cartridge, mineral buildup or a damaged seal within the cartridge. If the handle is loose it may not be installed properly or there may be an issue with the handle mechanism.

Solution

The cartridge will need to be serviced or replaced, depending on the model. To determine your model, please see our Find Your Product section.

For one-handle faucets with a 1225 cartridge, simply remove the cartridge and lubricate it both inside and out with a silicone-based grease (Moen part number 99915). Do not use plumber's grade faucet grease, silicon sprays or any lubricant that may contain petroleum. Petroleum-based lubricants may react with the rubber seals and could cause the handle to become even more difficult to operate.

For one-handle faucets with a 1255 or 4000 cartridge, the cartridge would need to be replaced.

For two-handle faucets, the 1224 cartridge would need to be replaced.

For Posi-Temp shower faucets, the 1222 cartridge would need to be replaced.

Typical Cause

During manufacturing, lubrication (silicone) is used on the cartridge. The combination of lubrication and the weight of the handle can cause the faucet to self-close. For models using a handle connector, a metal washer may be missing or the connector could be broken.

Solution

First, it is essential to identify the model of your faucet. Please view our Find Your Product section to determine your model.

If your faucet has a 1225 cartridge, make sure all the screws are tight.

If your faucet has a 1255 cartridge, replace the cartridge.

If your faucet has a 4000 cartridge, tighten the cartridge nut or replace the cartridge.

If your faucet has a handle connector:

1. Change the handle connector.
2. If the cartridge was replaced, check the old cartridge stem for a gray metal washer. This washer must be transferred to the stem of the new cartridge.

Typical Cause

This is caused by either a broken pivot rod or an issue with the adjustment the pivot rod or lift rod.

Solution

Inspect the pivot rod. This will be a silver rod that should be installed into the rear of the drain. Depending on the model, there will be a metal or gray plastic pivot rod nut securing the rod in place. This nut can be unscrewed to view the pivot rod. If this rod is broken, it will need to be replaced.

1. If the pivot rod is not broken, then it will need to be adjusted in conjunction with the lift rod. With the lift rod (the rod that you pull up on the close the drain) in position, verify it is inserted into the lift rod strap (this is a metallic piece with a series of holes) and secure it with the lift rod strap screw.
2. Connect the pivot rod to the lift rod strap using the spring clip that should be on the pivot rod.
3. Place the drain plug in the full open position, then loosen the lift rod strap screw and adjust the lift rod height so that the knob on top of the lift rod clears the faucet. Then tighten the lift rod strap screw.
